Music Promotion Is Broken. You Can Help Fix It!

In previous years, there have been countless studies on how listeners discover and consume music. However, with the music business tightening its belt to give board members greater dividends, this is one of the many things that has disappeared. Because the way we promote music is changing faster than ever, this is problematic, to say the least, as we are now using 2 to 3-year-old data in a rapidly changing landscape. So I decided to take matters into my own hands. I am conducting the largest survey on music consumption of the year, and I want you to not only take the survey but also help spread it. If you read this newsletter, you are concerned with promoting music, so getting this to as many people as possible will help us all. If you are sold, here’s a link, and I beg you to send this email and survey to as many friends as you have who are avid music fans so we can study them to serve them as fans and us as people who want to get music heard even better. 

Oh yeah, and I’m giving away a $20 Amazon gift card to 1 in 50 people who take it. This will allow us to know how people discover music and where we should focus and spend money. If user data from some of the apps is not relevant to the genre of music you are promoting, there is so much we can do with this data that can help guide you, and I will be breaking it down in videos and livestreams in the future.

  1. Take the survey yourself. We want anyone who listens to music listening to take it.

  2. Share it with friends by forwarding this email or its web address. Text it to friends or just send the survey itself. Whatever you think is best.

  3. Share it on X, Threads, Blue Sky, Instagram Stories, Discords, Reddit—wherever you do this type of stuff.

  4. I made a video about this, too, if you think someone would rather be sent that. It will also help get it in the algorithm if you send that and help this spread.
