The World Of Music Marketing Discussion Is Amazing Now!

Hot Take - There's A Lot Of Great Discussions Happening In Music

Music Marketing Trends is a Newsletter by Jesse Cannon that breaks down how musicians really get their music heard. If you know a story we should be telling or an artist we should cover just hit reply to this email.

So this week I personally have big news, my podcast My .4 Cents first episode is up now. I am lucky to be co-hosting with Matt Bacon, Andrew Southworth & Dustin Boyer, and I think we have some really fun discussions coming your way. Find us on your favorite podcasting app or YouTube to hear our discussion of TikTok’s new app and marketing music to your friends.

This week, instead of running my mouth, I want to recommend that others pay attention to. I have been sharing music marketing knowledge on the Internet since 1999, and most of the time it’s been filled with people who are either clueless, unhelpful, grifting, or predatory. While this still exists, I think there are more great voices in music marketing and fewer bad ones, so this week I want to celebrate some of my favorites.

I would be remiss if I didn’t first push out my co-hosts of My .4 Cents.

Dustin Boyer consistently does great and insightful videos on the music business and marketing on Instagram and TikTok.

Andrew Southworth is the Internet’s foremost authority on music advertising and an amazing marketer. You can find him on YouTube, and he has an incredible newsletter.

Matt Bacon posts a half-dozen videos of great advice each day on Instagram and TikTok.

Enjoying this? Forward it to a music friend you’d like to be closer to and start a discussion!

After that, I have to shout out the best journalist who regularly discusses music marketing and the business, Kristin Robinson, at Billboard. She also puts out incredible TikToks.

John Strohm is a music business veteran who writes one of my favorite newsletters, Ready For Nothing. I highly recommend his recent blasts on songwriting cuts and A&R’s role.

Assistants vs Agents is a fantastic newsletter that I read every week covering the business of music.

Switched On Pop is the best podcast on music and an essential listen every week.

Music Ally consistently is one of the best reads I take in each week.

By no means is this a comprehensive list, and I am sure the moment I hit send on this, I will remember someone I am mortified I left off. However, this is what I came up with in the 45 minutes I had to write this week. I highly suggest following up with each of them.

If you enjoyed this for $5 a month, I break down how musicians are blowing up their music in 5 videos every month. We also break down what musicians need to know with the latest changes in social media and music promotion; answer your questions. I also listen to member’s music once a month. Sign up here.
